Development: a word that is often used by companies, politicians and even celebrities to describe their current mission as citizens of South Africa. Oftentimes, it is linked to education and transformation of the socio-economic landscape of the country, with a purpose to create change from grassroots up. It looks good and sounds even better yet only one thing makes it believable, its sincerity.
Throughout my journey in the community development space, I have come across companies that are more interested in ticking boxes and quantifying their level of involvement for points instead of investing in quality programs and interventions within communities. They want to bring changes and “develop” society without taking the time and genuine interest in asking individuals about their needs and their struggles. They hardly take the time to listen to people’s inspiring stories, bursting with beauty and awe. For this sole purpose, their development is not sustainable. The youth doesn’t feel that they are being cared for, neither does the community at large. The teachers are overwhelmed, the parents feel hopeless… it’s all a cycle of despair and uncertainty.
I have seen the difference it makes in one’s life when they are treated with care and respect. Enough care to be asked, “How are you doing?” Enough respect to find out, “who are you?” This is what builds relationships, what grows individuals, what changes society and what develops communities. I love what I do. I have an unshaken passion for it, connecting with individuals from across the country and being inspired by them. They have so much to teach and to show me about love, kindness, respect, perseverance and humility. My wish is for more individuals and organisations with the ability and interest to be a part of true development to participate but with the right attitude, with an open mind and with true intentions to really change lives and shape society.
